Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE: BABA), the Chinese technology giant, enhanced its cloud computing presence with its computing arm, Alibaba Cloud, in Europe on Tuesday by launching cloud products around artificial intelligence (AI) and big data in Europe that have already been in use in other markets including China, aimed at challenging the dominance of Microsoft and Amazon.
According to the announcement Alibaba made at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Alibaba Cloud is launching three key products – Image search solutions, which can enable users to search for information online and offline using images; Intelligent Services Robot, a chat-robot for business; and Dataphin, an intelligent data engine developed to cope with the cross-industry big data development, management and application needs.
“The decision making around how a business is to operate in the digital age is increasingly a strategic one. To meet their changing needs, we are able to leverage our practical experience of digital transformation and successes accumulated in China to the benefit of European enterprises.” Said Yeming Wang, General Manager of Alibaba Cloud Europe, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Alibaba Cloud has entered in Europe market since 2016, and has launched AI and data-focused products last year. Even though, so far Alibaba's efforts have focused on serving Chinese customers operating in Europe, it aims to try and sign up European businesses.
Even though it only makes up 4 percent of the total revenues for Alibaba, the cloud business is Alibaba's fastest-growing unit with revenues growing 104 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2017 to 3.6 billion yuan ($570.6 million). It has more than 1 million paying customers.
