Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) is quickly becoming the new Santa Claus this holiday season with its Prime membership program. It has shipped over one billion items worldwide through this program, granting free two-day shipping for all its customers. The fastest Amazon Prime shipping was reportedly 13 minutes. Of the items shipped, the Echo and the Echo Dot, smart speakers that can be controlled with your voice and recognize and respond to the name “Alexa”, topped the charts in sales for Amazon. The CEO of Amazon’s Worldwide Consumer, Jeff Wilke, claims that even though they have been producing as much of the product as possible, the company “still had trouble keeping them in stock.” The sales for the Amazon Echo were nine times the sales it had the previous year.
December 19th was reportedly the most busy day during the holidays. According to Amazon’s Retail Metrics President Ken Perkins, “prime customers are spending twice as much as other consumers using Amazon” which is fueling the “rapid growth revenue that few retailers with only a fraction of Amazon’s revenues are able to generate.” Amazon’s Dash, a device used for ordering goods online, has made the process for buying items easier for consumers, which has in turn applied pressured on other retailers since it can easily become the go-to for online shopping.
In addition to the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot, the next best-sellers in tech for Amazon include the Fujifilm Instax Mini Camera and film, the Fire Tablet, the Kindle Paperwhite E-reader, Polaroids, the Samsung Gear VR 2016, and the GoPro HERO5.
