On Friday, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced that they would be opening a new distribution center in Bolton, northwest England by next year. Already, the company has 16 distribution centers in Britain and the new center will be supported by advanced robotics technology to help lift and move products around the facility with 1,200 new and full time permanent staff to be hired. This will mark a total of 3,500 jobs in the region.
Amazon has invested $8.3 billion including operating costs in Britain since 2010 in research and development, logistics, order filling, and head office functions. Warehouse staff have been employed directly instead of through contract firms which offer small employment security. Any new worker that is hired will have access to stock options, levels of pay, pensions and training where salaries would start at 7.65 pounds per hour.
The company is still looking for new facilities to help grow their product selection and enable more small and medium enterprises to sell their own products through their Marketplace.
