In a rare and pleasant sighting, it was a pleasant opportunity to witness big money backing anti-cigarette initiatives and movements in the state if California. The environment activist and anti-cigarette lobbyist Tom Seyter has been actively going against the might of the tobacco industry in the United States of America for a while now.
Tom Seyter originally hailed from New York and has made his money through hedge fund investments. As of the year 2015, Seyter’s net worth stood at 1.62 billion dollars. He has also been one of the largest liberal camp donors for various campaigns which include the ongoing Presidential campaign. Tom Seyter has been one of the few businessmen that have been bold enough to combat the tobacco lobby.
A billionaire benefactor
Tom Seyter has donated over 74 million dollars in campaigns also focusing efforts on trying to put out the sale of tobacco. Seyter recently mentioned in a statement that tobacco has been one of the leading cause of deaths through preventable and curable diseases such as lung cancer, which is an avoidable disease, but for the use of tobacco. Seyter has also invested over a million dollars in attempts to bring on-board signatures to go against the tobacco industry.
Seyter has been actively lobbying for a tax hike in the tobacco purchase and production. This would mean a sudden and drastic hike in cigarette prices across the state of California. Seyter also stated that the tobacco industry is one of the largest challenges to the public health sector. The state of California is seriously considering the proposal of the tax hike through the leverage that Seyter has bought into the scenario. Many critics however, claim that the fight against tobacco by Seyter is merely a farce as it would provide him a platform to run for governor of California in 2018.
Stage set for a heavy weight battle
Seyter has enlisted the help of various organizations that are inherently opposed to the use of tobacco. The American Health Organization, the American Heart Organization and the American Lung Organization are some of the many organizations enlisted into the long line of signatories to the proposed two dollar tax hike on cigarettes. The tobacco industry seems to be fighting back incessantly and will be investing a larger sum of money to combat the proposed two dollar tax hike for cigarettes.
