BlackBerry Ltd. (NASDAQ:BBRY) will spend 100 million Canadian dollars (almost $75 million) and create over 600 jobs within the next few years to develop a self-driving automobile facility in Canada, Reuters reported. The tech company announced it will be located at its facility in Ottawa, Ontario. The company’s cyber security will be applied to their self-driving vehicles.
Using its software, BlackBerry will build a concept vehicle partnered with PoloSync, the University of Waterloo and Renesas Electronics. “This center will create great middle-class jobs for Canadians, new opportunities for recent university graduated and further position Canada as a global hub for innovation,” Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister said in a statement.
Early this year BlackBerry had announced the halt of production of its own phones as it continued to struggle keeping up with competitors.
