It was some serious fun for the people in Alberta during this season’s Calgary Stampede that brought with it a whopping $2.5 million to give away as prizes. Some lucky few walked away from the grounds with sizeable fortunes that included one of the most luxurious premium residential properties ever offered at the lottery, and a staggering $825,423 in cash at the Split’em 50 Draw.
A guy from Nanton named Donald Wakelam ended up winning the gorgeous 4-bedroom Scandinavian Rotary Dream Home worth $938,375 in an exceptionally lucky stint at the Calgary Stampede. On the other hand, Airdrie resident, Donna Wilshusen, became this year’s lucky winner at the Split’em 50 and left the grounds with half of the amount of the jackpot worth $1,650,865.
Still in disbelief over the extraordinarily fortunate turn of events, Donald Wakelam recalls that his wife had been following the results of the Calgary Stampede Lottery on the television news hour, when all of sudden, he heard a loud scream. Thinking that something had happened to one of his kids, Donald rushed to the room only to find his wife jumping around and yelling that they had won a house!
Born and brought up in the city of Calgary, Donald has had the habit of purchasing lottery tickets for a greater part of his adulthood. Intriguingly, contrary to the yearly ritual that he follows with utter dedication, this is the first time in over twenty years that Donald did not participate in the 10-day long celebration. Not having seen the house ever before, Donald quipped that he had taken over a dozen virtual tours of the property.
An absolutely ecstatic Donald remarked that there is nothing more that he could have asked for. Likely to be ready to move in sometime in November this year, the newly built dream home is sprawled across an impressive 2,580 square feet in the North-West Community of Carrington and features a finished basement as well.
Another euphoric participant of the Stampede Lottery, Donna who won the million-dollar check remarked that she still cannot come to terms with reality and believe that out of hundreds of thousands of tickets, her ticket came out to be the only lucky draw. When asked about what she would do with this massive sum of money, Donna replied that although this victory means a lot to her family, they are yet to figure out ways of making the best use of it.
