Claire's, the Hoffman Estates-based accessories retailer, announced that it has pulled some of its makeup products off the shelves after a woman said the she found asbestos in her daughter’s makeup.
A report from WJAR-TV in Rhode Island on Friday said that Kristiana Warner mailed her daughter's glitter makeup kit to an independent lab, which found that the makeup kit contained tremolite asbestos. Asbestos was once commonly used for building insulation, and has been found to cause certain types of cancers and tumors on internal organs. “You assume that when you’re purchasing it, it is safe,” Kristiana said.
On Saturday, Claire's quietly announced the recall on its Twitter page. Affected products listed on Claire's website include its Pink Glitter Cellphone Makeup Compact and Bedazzled Rainbow Heart Makeup Set.
“We have taken the precautionary measure of pulling the items in question from sale ... Once we have more information and have the results of the investigation we will take the necessary action. If you have items you wish to return in the interim period we will issue a refund,” the company said in the statement.
“As always, the safety of our customers and products is our top priority,” Claire's said.
