Senate Democrats took to the floor to publicly protest against hidden moves by GOP majority to roll back the Affordable Care Act or ACA law. The ACA, popularly known as Obamacare, came to be the law under the Democrat President Barack Obama. Democrats roundly criticized the private meetings which the GOP were holding to rewrite the present ACA and substitute it with their healthcare law version. They were doing through a series of lengthy speeches, floor motions and inquiries.
The Democrats have asked for committee hearings open to all interested in them. They have also suggested that the bill should be considered for a lengthier period of time before taking a decision on Senate vote. According to Republicans, the bill will arrive within June or first week of July. This seems doubtful as a draft bill is still not in evident from the Republican side.
Although Senators have every right to hold meetings in private, Democrats pointed out the innumerable floor debates and lengthy committee meetings held on the subject of ACA until it was made into law in 2010. A number of Democrats have asked the healthcare legislation be referred to the Senate Committees for their hearings, but Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, refused to do so. According to McConnell, all senators of the Republican party have involved themselves in healthcare meetings and Democrats will have their chance to amend such a legislation generated by the GOP. The document will be brought to the floor of the Senate.
The minority Democrats lack the numbers to sabotage the GOP process. The maneuvers being made by Democrats appears to be aimed at putting the spotlight on GOP efforts on such a controversial issue. A number of polls taken on this subject clearly stated that most Americans do not approve of the ACA substitute. This replacement law has passed House of Representatives. The substitute law are now being considered by the Senate Republicans.
Chuck Schumer, the Senior Democratic Leader, said that the private GOP meetings on the subject of healthcare is a one of the most abnormal legislative procedure he has ever witnessed. He continued on to say that the GOP are penning their own healthcare bill in private as they are actually ashamed of it. The legislation formed as a result of these efforts will in all likely eject millions of Americans from the protective custody of health insurance. He pointed out that the law will offer a substantial tax break to the wealthy.
