Although the United States is one country, it is made of 50 states. Every state, thanks to 10th amendment, has total freedom to do a number of things as per the guidance of its state legislature. Representative to the latter is voted by the citizens of the state. The federal government plays a minimal role in such a matter. This is the reason why a majority of the taxes paid depends on the tax payer's consumption and geographical location.
State and local income taxes
The first tax on the list is the state income tax. Where you live determines the rate of tax or if you have to pay at all. In case you do not have to pay the state income tax in the state you live, the government will extract the money from imposing higher tariffs like property tax, higher sales tax, or utility tax. These state taxes provide much needed funding of public works from constructing highways to making state parks.
In contrast, only a few states impose local income tax on their citizens. This number decreases every year as a majority opf county and city budgets get determined by state itself. Sales tax are higher in a few states due to the absence of other taxes. This does not mean every state imposes sales tax. New Hampshire residents does not pay either state income tax or sales tax.
Utility and property taxes
Utility tax is a levy which most Americans pay. Money is paid to the utility provider and thus indirectly to the government for utilities like electricity, water, or natural gas. However, it is observed that many utility companies cheat on their taxes. Money collected from consumers are not passed to the government. One other levy is the public transportation fare. This tax is imposed on and over the standard state income tax. This extra tax makes up for the discounted fare offered to people due to income. It means if public transportation fare are actually a kind of taxes.
A prominent tax is the property tax. This tax is imposed on the homeowners and may vary from one county to another. The rates of property tax are determined and also paid to county where the taxpayer owns property. The property tax can also be applied to a few other instances like boats. Sin taxes are imposed on things viewed as morally questionable like alcohol, gambling and smoking.
