Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT) announced that they will offer free shipping starting in November while pricing gifts under $15 as the company goes head to head against competitors such as Amazon and Walmart for the holidays. The retailer also will offer promotional deals during weekends during the months of November and December while selling about 1,700 gifting products and more than 1,400 toys including LEGO, Star Wars, and Netflix products. Shoppers can also get their hands on $1 stocking stuffers. Target also wants to launch a service that will allow online shoppers to send friends and family members electronic gift boxes that will allow them to make any changes to items or select different gifts before shipping.
Surveys show that customers will spend more on holiday gifts this year due to increasing online sales as well as a strong labor market. Target announced that they were to hire 100,000 temporary workers for the holiday season which is 70,000 more employees hired in each of the previous four years. The retailer has also been lowering prices on thousands of products as they continue to compete with rivals.
"This is the perfect solution for that fussy relative that we all have,'' said Mike McNamara, a Target executive vice president, at an event last week in New York to introduce it. "It's also great for last-minute gifting because you don't have to worry about whether the product is going to get there in time for Christmas. The e-gift is going to get there as fast as email.''
