On Friday, in a surprise announcement, Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA) revealed it’s continues venture into the solar energy sector, and as always with Tesla and the people behind it the new product is quite innovative.
Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk started his presentation in Hollywood, in a place that previously served as the set for “Desperate Housewives,” and started talking about climate change. The crowd, surrounded by houses, didn’t realize at first that the houses are powered by solar energy.
“The interesting thing is that the houses you see around you are all solar houses… Did you notice?” Musk asked. No one did. According to a Bloomberg reporter, there was nothing that looked like the traditional solar panels we were used to. Instead the roof tiles were made of textured glass, and looked like regular tiles. The glass allows the sun to get to the solar cell underneath.
According to current plans, Panasonic will produce the solar cells and Tesla will put together the glass tiles and build the roofs. In addition, Tesla’s board is expected to make a decision on November 17th regarding the possible acquisition of SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY).
