The Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, will not be stepping down from his post, says officials as rumors of the man leaving his job have been making the rounds. However, Heather Nauert, spokesperson for the State Department did confirm that he may not be seen for a while as he is taking a 'little time off'. She also said that the Secretary is 'deeply engaged' in the work that remains to be done and that he will continue to carry out his responsibilities after the brief hiatus.
Tillerson indicates 'end of year' deadline
Meanwhile, Tillerson himself is said to have given indications that he will stay on but only until the year draws to a close. There are rumors that he has made this statement to acquaintances. However, there have been rumblings inside, in Washington, that indicates that he may not last that long and will quit well before the year end. Tillerson's alleged remarks about quitting have been brushed off by the state department as a rant after a tough work week. The Secretary of State's senior aide, RC Hammond, also made it clear that the secretary will stay in his office.
Facing off with the President
The main reason for the rumors of the decision to quit came up after yet another tiff between the Secretary of State Tillerson and President Trump. The two have been at loggerheads ever since the Presidential elections and the face-off have not escaped media or public attention. Tillerson had mentioned in the past how he had found things much easier when he was CEO of Exxon because he could make decisions on his own and how his inability to do that now was a challenge.
Meanwhile, a speech that the President gave to thousands of Boy Scouts could have further alienated the Secretary of State, media reports. Tillerson, a former national president of Boy Scouts, is not likely to have particularly liked the fact that the President chose to bring up his views on Obamacare at this event. Another issue that is fueling the reports of Tillerson quitting his post is that the candidate he proposed as top diplomat to Asia is not favored by the administration, leading to further differences in views. A new candidate is now being determined by Tillerson after he failed to convince the powers that his first choice was the ideal person for the job.
