Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) CEO Tim Cook has recently said in an interview that the tech giant is developing self-driving technology that can be simply described as the “mother of all AI [artificial intelligence] projects”. Although Apple denied rumors of working on a self-driving car, they have been working on self- driving vehicles for several years.
According to the financial times, Apple has hired automotive specialists from companies such as for and Mercedes-Benz. Sources from Bloomberg also believes that Apple hired approximately 1,000 engineers working on self-driving software.
There are not that many details regarding the actual project, but Cook has revealed that he believes that this is a “core technology” and that “it’s probably one of the most difficult AI projects to actually work on”. Internally known as “Project Titan” Apple previously never announced that they would be working on automotive technology, and speculators have originally believed that they were working on a physical vehicle.
Business Insider has revealed documents that apple has developed a program “capable of sending electronic commands for steering, accelerating, and decelerating”. Moreover, apple plans to put their employees through training programs to operate the cars before testing.
