President Trump appears to be in the eye of a storm yet again after news broke out about a talk that he had over the phone with the family of a fallen soldier. The comment that he allegedly made has spiraled into a big issue that many views as a major blow to him. The soldier in question, Sgt. La David Johnson, lost his life in Niger when he was ambushed. The tragic incident in which the soldier lost his life happened some two weeks ago.
President accused of callous remarks to bereaved family
Following his call to the wife of the slain soldier, President Trump's alleged comments were publicized by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson. Wilson claimed that the President had told the bereaved wife that her husband 'knew what he was signing up for' and then went on to offer condolences. She pointed out that the President's comments were callous in the extreme and most inappropriate for the situation and for the person he was speaking to. According to the Congresswoman, she was traveling with the soldier's wife, Myeshia Johnson, when the latter received the call from the President. She said she heard the call on speakerphone. The congresswoman was with the soldier's wife and mother and they were on their way to receive his body at the Miami International Airport when the call took place.
Trump contradicts congresswoman's statement
Trump responded to questions from the press about the Congresswoman's statement and said that she was wrong and that he never said anything like she claimed. He put off any further comments by saying that the congresswoman should make her claim again. Meanwhile, the mother of the slain soldier, who was also in the same car along with his wife and the congresswoman confirmed that the President had indeed made the comment mentioned by the Congresswoman. She went on to point out that with this comment, the President had not only disrespected the solider but also his bereaved wife and family.
Trump has been in the news for similar incidents in the past as well, where there have been allegations that he has not given proper respect to military personnel or their families. In this incident, with Sgt. Johnson being one of the four soldiers killed, the President is facing criticism for not making calls to the family for 12 days after the tragic incident occurred.
