This morning two huge companies decided to cut ties with a Tennessee farm after animal rights workers shot video of farmers stabbing, clubbing and stomping on chickens. The two companies that cut ties immediately after seeing the video was McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) and Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE:TSN).
The undercover video which was taped by members of the Mercy for Animals organization, they released the footage in a news conference in Los Angeles. The chickens were treated cruelly and the group says that the T&S farm in Dukedom, Tennessee is responsible for the cruelty. Before this video the Tyson foods and the farm were under contract, for those who don’t know Tyson supplies chicken to McDonalds for their McNuggets which makes the farm one of the most profitable in the country.
There is still no word from the T&S farm nor comments from any of their representatives.
Tyson on the other hand had released a statement of the situation as soon as they saw the video in Los Angeles. "Animal well-being is a priority at our company and we will not tolerate the unacceptable animal treatment shown in this video," Tyson spokesman Worth Sparkman said. "Members of our animal well-being team are investigating, however, based on what we currently know, we are terminating the farmer's contract to grow chickens for us," said Sparkman, adding there were currently no chickens on the farm.
There was another statement released, this time it was from McDonald’s which had this to say about the situation, "we find the behavior depicted in this video to be completely unacceptable. We're committed to working with animal welfare and industry experts to inform our policies that promote better management, strong employee education and verification of practices," McDonald's said.
It’s safe to say that today isn’t a good day for the farmers at T&S…
