Waymo is seeking $1 billion damages and a public apology from Uber as they settle a lawsuit and ensures that Uber does not use Waymo technology in the future. This settlement between these two companies follow after Waymo sued Uber in February after a former engineer downloaded more than 14,000 confidential files before leaving to set up a self driving truck company called Otto which Uber acquired shortly after. The engineer then refused to return Waymo’s documents and declined to answer any questions from Waymo’s lawyers.
Following this, Uber co founder Travis Kalanick stepped down from position as chief executive after allegations of misconduct at the company becoming public and was then scheduled to give a deposition on the case. Damages in the Waymo case totaled to about $1.9 billion with declaration that Waymo wins a permanent injunction against Uber using any of their intellectual property. Uber is now forced to disclose their source code or underlying software for certain products.
