Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) has been gaining more attention when it announced that it would be giving a free 30-day trial for its 2-day shipping program, ShippingPass. Not only is Wal-Mart giving any new subscribers a 30-day free trail, it also grants existing members a month free pass.
Wal-Mart has been trying to compete with Amazon’s 2-day shipping program, Amazon Prime, for a while now. Initially, Wal-Mart’s shipping program, ShippingPass, only offered free 3-day shipping but eventually, Wal-Mart has matched Amazon Prime’s unlimited 2-day shipping. In addition, ShippingPass also allows customers to purchase items without a minimum order requirement and returns are free.
Not only has Wal-Mart matched Amazon Prime’s speed but it also offers a better price. Its subscription cost $49 a year in comparison to Amazon Prime’s $99 a year.
Although ShippingPass offers a better price, it does not include all the benefits Amazon Prime has. Beyond the free 2-day shipping, Prime offers many services such as Instant Video, Amazon Music, unlimited photo storage and free e-books.
Wal-Mart has been ramping up its efforts to defeat its competitors. With this new initiative, Wal-Mart might just tip the scale.
