Katrina Bookman hit the jackpot on a penny slot machine at Resorts World Casino, when she had come to claim her winnings a casino representative told her she did not win. They said the machine malfunctioned, then she was offered a free steak dinner.
There is a notice on the slot machines that state, “Malfunctions void all pays and plays.” Bookman and her attorney Alan Ripka believe she should be offered the maximum amount of money an individual can win on the Sphinx slot machine, a maximum of $6,500.
“They win and the house doesn’t want to pay out. To me that’s unfair,” Ripka said. “The machine takes your money when you lose. It ought to pay it when you win.” The New York State Gaming Commission stated that Bookman is only entitled of her printed winning ticket of $2.25, she plans to sue the casino.
