Alex van der Zwaan, 33 years old, and previous employee of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, has admitted in the federal court of Washington that he made false statements regarding his interactions with Rick Gates. The latter was a former aide of Donald J. Trump. Zwaan could escape prison time due to this plea deal.
Zwaan's charges do not include meddling in presidential elections. It also does not have any relation to the campaign operations done by the Trump campaign aides. The actual charges have their roots in the investigation began by the special counsel into the activities of Paul Manafort, the former chairperson of Trump presidential campaign. The investigation also included Gates, who is also Manafort's business associate. Both Manafort and Gates were legally indicted in 2017 on charges related to conspiring of laundering millions of US dollars. They also admitted to directing a covert lobbying campaign in Washington for the betterment of Ukrainian interests. The latter is pro-Russian. Both Manafort and Gates have pleaded not guilty.
Zwaan, a citizen of the Netherlands, and who lives in London, admitted that he lied to the federal investigators. The latter questioned him concerning a report which Gates and Manafort have funded by funneling approximately four million dollars via an offshore account. This particular report was authored by the Skadden Arps. It zeroed on the trial of Yulia Tymoshenko, the former Ukrainian Prime Minister and the present political foe of Viktor Yanukovych, the former Ukrainian President. The latter's political party was once a client of Manafort and Gates.
Zwaan was sacked in 2017 by Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. When he made the confession, he became the fourth individual to plead guilty in the Russia investigation. The latter was being done by Robert Mueller, the special counsel. Zwaan's plea comes after Mueller gave an extraordinary indictment which charged 13 Russians and also three Russian companies. The guilty did an effective effort on the use of Social Media which led to actual physical rallies on roads. The mentioned guilty tried to meddle in 2016 US presidential election. This was done by the systematic denigrating of Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton. They also helped the Donald Trump campaign. The latter was successful and Trump became the president.
Zwaan admitted that false statements were made about the timing of the last communication made with Gates and another person, termed “Person A”. The latter was a longtime associate of Gates and Manafort in Ukraine.
