Mackenzie Bezos, Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, announced on Tuesday that she will donate a large fraction of her fortune to charitable causes. After dissolving her marriage with the Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) Founder earlier this year, Ms. Bezos received a stake in Amazon which values her net worth at nearly USD 37 Billion.
Mackenzie Bezos has previously funded cancer research as well as the anti-bullying organization, Bystander Revolution.
In a letter, Mackenzie Bezos writes, “My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.”
Her promise to contribute was made by the Giving Pledge. The Giving Pledge was founded by Warren Buffet and the Gates family, and it aims to bolster the wealthiest individuals in the world to devote the majority of their fortune to philanthropy.
“The generosity of this group is a reflection of the inspiration we take from the many millions of people who work quietly and effectively to create a better world for others, often at great personal sacrifice,” Warren Buffett said in a statement.
At a total of 204 supporting individuals and families, the initiative gained 19 new signatories on Tuesday, including Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, Paul Sciarra, co-founder of Pinterest, and Mackenzie Bezos.
As of today, Ms. Bezos is the 3rd wealthiest woman in the world. Her altruistic characteristics inspire many of her supporters, including her ex-husband.
Jeff Bezos states in a tweet, “MacKenzie is going to be amazing and thoughtful and effective at philanthropy, and I’m proud of her.”
