Best Buy to Close Thanksgiving Day & Offer Online Black Friday Deals

Best Buy (NYSE: BBY), announced it will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day and will execute most of its Black Friday sales online for the second consecutive year. Similarly, retailers such as Target and Walmart will also be closed on Thanksgiving for the second year in a row.

“This year, we’ll have even more ways for customers to easily and conveniently get their holiday shopping done, over the Black Friday weekend and throughout the entire holiday season,” the retailer said.

The American retailer experienced a “much stronger” fiscal year than it had previously anticipated as sales rose 36% in the first fiscal quarter ending May 1. As a result, the company increased its full year outlook.

Amid the pandemic and imposed restrictions, customers’ shopping habits evolved as they demanded more contactless alternatives, like online shopping or curbside pickup. Stores used the opportunity to offer deals through their websites and thus decrease in-store crowds.

Target announced early in the year that its stores would be closed on Thanksgiving 2021, and would repeat its 2020 approach.

“The response was so positive that we’ll carry it forward this year,” the company said in a January blog post.

Furthermore, Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Lauren Hobart, revealed it would not only close all retail locations but would also close its distribution centers on Thanksgiving Day.

“We closed our stores and distribution centers last year on Thanksgiving as a way of saying ‘thank you’ to our teammates for navigating all the stress and strain of 2020 and to encourage our teammates and customers to spend time with their loved ones,” she said. “This year, we wanted to give our teammates plenty of notice that we will be closed again, so they have the opportunity to plan for their annual traditions — whether it’s participating in a fun run, watching football or enjoying Thanksgiving dinner.”
