Disney’s Beauty and the Beast snags $170 million in U.S. ticket sales

Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS), animated classic “Beauty and the Beast” debut with new live action and digital effects. U.S. ticket sales boasted an estimated $170 million trumping last year’s record-holder for G- or PG-rated releases “Finding Dory” that debuted with ticket sales of $135 million.

“Beauty and the Beast” is the latest installment of Disney’s effort to re-create its animated classics. Previous recreated animated films into live action with digital effects include “Cinderella,” “Maleficent” and “The Jungle Book.” Many critics applauded the film but some ridiculed the fact that Disney introduced their first openly gay character.  Although the film faced some criticism for introducting their first homosexual character, Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" is the new leader in ticket sales for family movies.
