Facebook Messenger Hits a Billion Users

Facebook’s (NASDAQ: FB) Messenger app has recently hit more than 1 billion users, making it one of the world’s most popular apps. Splitting off of Facebook’s main app, this messenger has hit the world’s top three most used apps in only 2 years.

Facebook now owns 3 applications that have more than 1 billion active monthly users, which include Facebook’s main app, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. Following those, Facebook’s Instagram also has more than 500 million users. Facebook Inc. is dominating the mobile app scene, making most of its money from advertisements seen by its vast user base.

Although Facebook’s Messenger app recently hit 1 billion users, it is still far from Facebook’s main app, which boasts a whopping 1.5 billion monthly active users, making it the most popular app in the world. The closest rivals to Facebook’s main app are Google Maps and YouTube according to independent data.

Facebook messenger has been constantly trying to add on to the messenger app. It’s added myriad features, such as its own emojis, gifs and even games.

According to Facebook, more than 1 billion messages are being sent between people each month through the messenger app, doubling over the past year.
