Genius Sports (NYSE: GENI), a sports data and technology company, just disclosed its partnership with the National Basketball Association league in Africa. The company will supply official real-time stats and provide new technology to the league.
The Basketball Africa League (BAL) will have access to Genius Sports FIBA Live Stats data collection tool, which captures advanced play-by-play statistics from courtside at each game. The plays include shot, foul and turnover locations which showcase the teams best players and feature real-time updates to fans watching the live action.
“The BAL will showcase and develop the most exciting basketball talent from across Africa and we’re very proud that our statistics technology will be at the heart of this new competition,” said Genius Sports CEO Mark Locke. “For more than 15 years, we have worked closely with FIBA to drive the development of world basketball and we’re thrilled to be working alongside the BAL to extend the sport’s reach and profile.”
Though the agreement does not include sports betting, Genius would like to incorporate artificial intelligence-driven technology, such as augmented reality features. Financial details regarding the deal have not been disclosed.
