International Olympic Committee strips 10 Athletes of medals from the 2008 Olympics

Banned substances were found during retests of samples from the 2008 Olympics. 10 athletes had medals removed, 9 of which were from former Soviet nations that had tested positive for different types of steroids. There were no gold medalists among the 10, three were silver medalists from wrestling and weightlifting. Triple Jumper Chrysopigi Devetzi and Ukrainian pole vaulter Denys Yurchenko lot their bronze medals. Yurchenko’s disqualification could put Derek Miles in the bronze medal position.

Six other athletes that did not win medals were disqualified as well. Chaunte Lowe, U.S. high jumper could inherit bronze even though he originally placed sixth. Two athletes that placed above Lowe were disqualified and the bronze position was reopened as Russian Anna Chicherova had tested positive for the steroid Turinabol.

Weightlifting has been the most influenced sport from the disqualifications. 22 athletes have been sanctioned on Thursday as they face retests that saw steroid use.
