Is Hookah Really that Safe?

Hookah, Water Pipe, Cancer, Safety, StudyAs of late the hookah, also known as water pipes has become the most popular alternative to cigarettes, throughout the world. If you ask a person why they do it, most say that it is safer than a cigarette, but unfortunately they are wrong. A new study shows how hookah users are still exposed to cancer causing toxins.

Laboratory exams have advised the risks for hookah users, with the first big link between hookah and cancer being determined and outlined in a study by Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.  The research concluded by saying that those who use hookah get exposed to nicotine and other harmful chemicals.

“One of the main reasons for doing this study is water pipe smoking is becoming much more popular – especially among younger people and college students,” said Gideon St.Helen, the study’s lead author from the University of California, San Francisco.

Water pipes contain a long tube attached to a glass or plastic container that holds water. The tobacco, which is flavored with fruits and sugar syrup, is burned using charcoal. The smoke passes through the water before being inhaled.

“What the water does do is not filter the smoke, but cools the smoke so it’s very easy to inhale, If you’re not smoking cigarettes because you’re worried about tobacco-caused diseases, you should also not be smoking water pipes,”  said Eissenberg, a professor who studies the effect of water pipe in Virginia Commonwealth University,in Richmond.
