US stocks showed mixed results on October 12. There were gains in Consumer Goods, Utilities and Telecoms sectors. These were weighed down by losses in the Basic Materials, Healthcare, and Oil & Gas sectors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average or DJIA gained 0.09 percent at NYSE close. There was a 0.11 percent gain in S&P 500 index. There was a 0.15 percent loss in NASDAQ Composite index.
Declining and rising stocks
The number of declining stocks was outnumbered by rising ones on New York Stock Exchange by 1526 to 1611. The number of stocks which went unchanged was 91. In NASDAQ stock exchange, 1133 advanced and 1334 fell. The number of unchanged stocks was 114.
Best Buy Co. (NYSE:BBY) shares went up to its 52 wee highs, gaining 1.45 or 3.78 percent to touch 39.78. Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson B shares slid to its five year lows or 20.83 percent to 5.55. It was a gain of 1.46. CBOE Volatility Index, entrusted with measuring the S&P 500 options volatility, rose 2.86 percent to touch 15.80.
The gold scheduled for delivery in December went up 0.15 or 0.01 percent to $1256.05 per troy ounce. In other commodities trading, the Crude oil scheduled for November delivery dropped 0.51 or 1.00 percent to hit $50.28 per barrel. The contract for December for Brent oil dropped 0.54 or 1.03 percent to scrape $51.87 per barrel.
Best performers at the exchanges
Nike Inc. (NYSE:NKE) was the best performer in the DJIA session. It went up 0.63 points or 1.22 percent to reach 52.45 where it closed. McDonald’s Corporation and The Travelers Companies Inc. added 1.05 points or 0.92 percent and 1.36 points or 1.19 percent to end at 114.73 and 115.36 in latter trade respectively. Cisco Systems Inc., Chevron Corporation and Exxon Mobil Corporation are the worst performers in this season with a drop of 0.70 points or 2.26 percent, 0.90 points or 0.87 percent and 0.64 points or 0.73 percent to touch 30.34, 102.14 and 87.10 respectively.
The best performers in NASDAQ were VOXX International Corporation, Htg Molecular Diagnostics Inc and Amyris Inc. They went up by 49.02 percent, 37.17 percent and 20.37 percent to reach 3.800, 3.100 and 0.770 respectively.
When it came to currency markets, the EUR/USD dropped 0.40 percent to 1.1010. The USD/JPY went up 0.71 percent to reach 104.25. There was an upside of 0.25 percent of US Dollar Index to 97.96.
