Oracle Corp. (NYSE:ORCL)provides products and services that address all aspects of corporate information technology (IT) environments, including application, platform and infrastructure. The Company’s businesses include cloud and on-premise software, hardware and services. The company announced it has acquired Dyn, an internet traffic company on Monday.
Dyn was a victim of a cyber-attack that knocked out multiple sites for a day. On October 21st, an unknown hacker took down its routing network as well as many other popular websites such as Etsy, Amazon, Netflix and Twitter. Dyn monitors and routes internet traffic.
The price Oracle Corp. paid was not disclosed. Oracle stands to benefit from Dyn by the company providing access to internet-performance information to aid in estimating infrastructure costs as well as risk management and web-driven revenue. Dyn “drives 40 billion traffic optimization decisions daily for more than 3,500 enterprise customers,” Oracle said.
Dyn made the news when it was with with a “distributed denial of service” or DDos attack, an attack that floods servers with numerous fake requests for information that they cannot respond to real ones. An executive at Level 3 Communications told a Congressional panel last week that he believed the cyber-attack was focused on the PlayStation Network, but has not been confirmed.
