Satellite Healthcare today announced it will participate in an ongoing clinical trial sponsored by DEKA Research & Development Corp. (DEKA). The study is investigating the clinical use of the HemoCare® Hemodialysis System, a new home hemodialysis machine that has been designed by DEKA with a goal to make overnight hemodialysis safer and easier to perform.
“Satellite Healthcare has a long history of bringing home dialysis innovation to patients with kidney disease. We are proud to bring this opportunity to our dialysis patients in the Austin market,” said Dr. Brigitte Schiller, Chief Medical Officer at Satellite Healthcare.
The trial, conducted with study partner CVS Kidney Care, will assess the safety and performance of the HemoCare Hemodialysis System. Eligible patients and their care partners will receive training on the machine in their own homes and transition to overnight home hemodialysis. The study is designed to collect and analyze all adverse safety events and routine lab tests that measure the efficacy of dialysis delivered by the machine.
“Home hemodialysis that is done frequently and for longer durations, especially when performed in the home setting, is associated with improved heart health, patient survival and quality of life. We look forward to the completion of this study, and ultimately FDA clearance, to allow more patients access to this therapy,” said Bruce Culleton, Chief Medical Officer at CVS Kidney Care. “Satellite Healthcare and CVS Kidney Care are committed to providing patients with technology that supports all forms of home dialysis. Studies such as this allow us to do just that and align with the future direction of kidney care in the United States.”
DEKA has a long history of developing successful medical devices including peritoneal dialysis machines, infusion pumps, and solutions for people with disabilities, including the LUKE prosthetic arm and iBot® Personal Mobility Device. CVS Kidney Care and Satellite Healthcare are collaborating nationally to support comprehensive kidney care, and to expand access to kidney transplantation and in-home dialysis.
