STATS Artificial Intelligence Team Selected to Present with Top NBA Personnel at Las Vegas Conference

STATS, the worldwide leader in sports data and intelligence, confirmed a
speaking opportunity at the Las Vegas Summer League’s Sports Business
Classroom 2018 Program.

On Wednesday, July 11 at 10 a.m. PDT, Aditya Cherukumudi, Computer
Vision Algorithms Engineer at STATS, will present on the panel, “Sloan
Analytics” at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV. Cherukumudi
is joined by Andrew Hartnett, Software Engineer at Argo AI (formerly
with Disney Research Pittsburgh) and Rachel Marty, a Ph.D. candidate in
bioinformatics at UCSD. Hartnett and Cherukumudi will present “Bhostgusters:
Realtime Interactive Play Sketching with Synthesized NBA Defenses,”
the second-place finisher at this year’s prestigious MIT Sloan Sports
Analytics Conference.

said Cherukumudi. “The paper is the result of a fruitful collaboration
between STATS, Disney Research and the Technical University of Munich.
‘Bhostgusters’ presents so many unique opportunities for NBA teams to
utilize deep-imitation learning and improve the process for making
in-game adjustments.”

“Bhostgusters” was a collaboration with Dr. Patrick Lucey, Vice
President of Artificial Intelligence at STATS; Thomas Seidl, Ph.D.
student at the Technical University of Munich; Cherukumudi, Hartnett;
and Peter Carr, Senior Staff Engineer at Argo AI, formerly with Disney
Research. The paper presents a new way for NBA coaches to communicate
in-game strategy to players through play-sketching from a data-driven
perspective. By using a powerful analytics framework built on
deep-imitation learning, the team created an intelligent and highly
intuitive user interface.
