ZINC AIR BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

MGX Renewables’ initial product to market is a modular energy Energy Storage System designed to deliver backup power in the range of 5 to 100 kW over extended periods of time. With the advantage of rechargeable zinc-air fuel cell technology, the system can be configured to support a wide range of discharge power, recharge power and duty cycle requirements. An independent Battery Management System enables the system to be configured for any AC/DC, load/source environment.

Since the system is modular, it can be scaled from 5kW upwards, with additional modules added as required. The system can deal with long discharge periods simply by increasing the size of the fuel tank; while short duty cycles do not adversely affect the reliability and durability of the system.

“The sun doesn’t shine all the time. The wind doesn’t blow all the time.  MGX Renewables mass storage batteries for the rest of the time.”

Principle of Operation

The fuel for the system is zinc and air – two of the most abundant, accessible, inexpensive and safe resources to be found. And because the air component of the fuel is obtained from the atmosphere and does not need to be stored within the system, the solution is very compact. The power (kW) and energy (kWh) can be scaled separately to service different applications.

The Regenerative Zinc-air Fuel Cell (RZFC) is based on an intellectual property portfolio of more than 20 granted patents.

 Advantages of Zinc

Zinc as an anode fuel has an advantage over other metals due to its unique set of attributes, which include a low equilibrium potential with respect to hydrogen, electrochemical reversibility, stability in aqueous electrolytes, high specific energy, high volumetric energy density, abundance, low cost, environmental compatibility, and ease of storage and handling.

In particular, its low equilibrium potential and high over-potential for hydrogen reaction make zinc the element with the lowest standard potential among all the elements that can be efficiently reduced from aqueous electrolytes.

MGXR Energy Storage System

The MGXR ESS is a modular Energy Storage System designed to deliver power in the range 20kW – 50MW and energy storage in the range of 120kWh – 1GWh over extended periods of time. With the advantage of rechargeable zinc-air battery technology, the system can be configured to support a wide range of discharge power, recharge power and duty cycle requirements. Since the energy storage capacity of the system is determined only by the size of the zinc storage tank, a very cost-effective and scalable solution now exists as an alternative to the fixed power/energy ratio of the lithium ion battery.

Technology

The MGXR ESS is based upon unique patented zinc-air battery technology. Energy is stored in the form of zinc particles, similar in size to grains of sand. When the system is delivering power, the zinc particles are combined with oxygen drawn from the surrounding air. When the system is recharging, zinc particles are regenerated, and oxygen is returned to the surrounding air.

Applications

The flexibility of the MGXR ESS enables it to service a wide range of applications. Typical examples include:

  • Storage and smoothing current from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar
  • Commercial, industrial backup replacing diesel generators
  • Industrial scale, on-demand power for peak shaving or standby
  • Grid scale energy storage for energy trading and arbitrage

Architecture

The MGXR ESS is designed according to a modular architecture that enables a wide variety of system configurations to be created from a small number of common subsystems. Each subsystem implements a single element of the technology:

  • The Zinc Regeneration Subsystem (ZRS) provides the recharging function
  • The Fuel Storage Subsystem (FSS) provides the energy storage function
  • The Power Generation Subsystem (PGS) provides the discharging function

Until the early 1970s, the majority of #Iceland’s energy consumption came from imported fossil fuels. Today, this island nation is running 100% on #RenewableEnergy. Other countries should follow their example

Renewable energy sources have considerable challenges not acknowledged by their promoters & supporters as do fossil energy sources.

No one is monopolizing energy supply. Consumers choose.

Many Western states are stepping up ambition on tackling the climate crisis with renewable energy, strengthening the case for regional grid coordination to cost-effectively meet these goals.

Moving to a clean energy economy presents real opportunities to replace lost jobs and cut consumer costs across the country.

Renewable energy jobs are booming, creating stable high-wage employment, as coal plants grow more expensive to run and replace.

fossil fuel profits can underwrite the cost of a global transition to renewable energy? The petroleum industry would actually increase their profits by doing so. It’s a win win for everyone.

the only issue I foresee is the pricing for these alternative eco-friendly forms of energy. The reason these big politicians don’t want to fork up the cash for these big eco-friendly projects is the fact that they do cost a premium compared to traditional standard forms of energy.
